More and more people are becoming overweight not just in the US, but all over the world.

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is by eating right and exercising regularly.

Natural weight loss.

Changing habits…eating routines, Lifestyle habits and physical activity.

It all comes down to finding the right combination and the right health improving options for you and your body.

Although, many people are looking for the quick-fix miracle that will help them shed their pounds right away.

One of the biggest buzz words in terms of weight loss is conjugated linoleic acid, otherwise known as CLA.

What is CLA all about?

CLA is often referred to as the “good fat” that is necessary in our bodies.

It’s mostly found in meat and dairy products of those animals that are able to feed on grass.

The reason that this is generating a great deal of interest is because the results of clinical studies have shown that CLA actually lowers body fat in overweight people while maintaining muscle mass & tissue.

Research has shown that CLA increases metabolism, decreases belly fat and can improve muscle growth.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid also lowers cholesterol and triglycerides and improves the immune system which is something we all could use.

The fact that these acids increase metabolism is a very exciting find, especially for the many who suffer from thyroid problems like hypothyroidism.

Thyroid problems can also be the culprit which leads to big bellies. CLA may solve those issues.

CLA is more common in grass-fed animals than in those who feed on grain. Grass fed meat is very important for many reasons to improve overall health. All meat consumed should be all-natural, hormone-free and steriod-free.

To get your dose of CLA, ensure you are getting meat from grass fed animals or take a look at the various weight supplements that include the fabricated version of CLA.

How about CLA Supplements?

Studies show that getting CLA naturally from food in small amounts is very beneficial.

Although, the CLA in supplements is comprised of chemically altering linoleic acid from vegetable oils and is usually a different form than the CLA occurring naturally in foods.

Supplemental doses are in fact much higher than the amounts people acquire from dairy or meat.

Commonly, certain nutrients are mostly beneficial when found in natural amounts in real foods — but become harmful when taken in large doses.

Research shows that this occurring with CLA supplements.

Large doses in CLA supplements can result in increased accumulation of fat in the liver, which is a precursor to diabetes & metabolic syndrome.

Many studies of both animals and humans reveal that CLA can cause inflammation, cause insulin resistance and decrease “good” HDL cholesterol

Bear in mind that a major of the relevant animal studies used doses much higher than amounts found in supplements.

Although, human studies using reasonable dose amounts showed that CLA supplements can still cause several mild or moderate side effects, including diarrhea & insulin resistance.

Bottom line.

CLA occurring naturally in food it’s a different form than that found in CLA supplements. Multiple studies done on animals have concluded harmful side effects from CLA such as increased liver fat accumulation.

What are safe dosage amounts?

During multiple research studies the average dose of CLA has been 3-6.5 grams per day.

One study reported that a minimum of 3 grams a day is required for weight loss.

Doses as high as 6.75 grams daily are still considered safe with no serious side effects reported in participants.

CLA that is added to food has been approved by the FDA and has been classified in a “generally regarded as safe” status.

Remember that negative side effect potential increases as the dosage increases.

The bottom line.

Research has proven that the recommended dose of 3-6 grams of CLA per day will not cause any serious side effects when used as directed, even taking doses up to 6 grams per day, although any higher doses increases the possible risk of decreased Liver Health.

Final Thought.

Research concludes that CLA has relatively moderate effects on weight loss.

When taking the proper recommended doses of CLA or amounts found naturally in food, no serious side effects are found.

Although, concerns about long term use even in recommended supplemental doses still exist.

Using a CLA supplement to lose a few pounds is most likely not worth the potential risk to your health, especially since there are other more efficient methods and lifestyle improving ways.

You will mostly not lose significant weight simply by getting the recommended daily amount of CLA. But using it in conjunction with healthy eating, improved sleeping habits and regular exercise is the most effective way to lose your “bad fat”.

As well as increasing water intake –drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables (especially the most brightly colored ones), whole natural grains, and Omega-3 fatty acids (from oily fish, nuts of flax seeds) every day.

Eat the proper caloric intake for your body weight and make sure to get enough sleep each night.

Eating insufficient calories can backfire and studies have proven that people who aren’t sleeping enough tend to be hungrier and overweight. Although, be sure to read my article on the benefits of intermittent fasting.

Regular exercise does not have to be strenuous. If you can make a commitment to walking for 20-30 minutes three to five times per week, then you are implementing regular exercise into your lifestyle.

There are other herbal supplements that I feel would be more beneficial than CLA. That do not have the potential side effects of CLA that may be a detriment to other body systems over time.

The combination of your daily dosage of conjugated linoleic acid or any other herbal weight loss supplement, paired with healthy eating habits and physical exercise will get you the results you would like to see.

Have that slim physique you’ve always desired.

Weight loss is attainable for anyone that is motivated and determined to improve their wellness and overall physical condition, with or without CLA.
